Webspace Review

Once you have your site made you'll need to get it onto the Internet. This involves FTPing your files onto a server (a computer that is permanently connected to the Internet) so that it can be accessed by anyone else in the world. The place you put your pages is called your webspace, and there are many companies who give it away for free, with some conditions.

Please note: maintaining these reviews of web hosts has become extremely time consuming, so these reviews are not particularly detailed. We are planning on launching a dedicated hosting review website to replace this page soon.

Your choice of the company who hosts your website is an important decision. Do you mind having ads on your site? Will you need guestbooks, counters, site-statistics? Do you want a domain name?
These are all options, and above I have a list of the top webhosting services; all of them free. Check out their various pros and cons, and decide for yourself. I've provided an 'editor's choice', in case you can't figure it out, but the best thing to do is give a few a try and settle on your favourite.

Once you have a webspace provider and have gone through the steps to sign up and get your own personal address; you will need to get your site online. You can either FTP it up, or in some providers, use an online file transfer program. To FTP, you will need an FTP client, like CuteFTP. The information you'll need (passwords and whatnot) should be available on the website somewhere once you've signed up.

Remember to name your homepage 'index.html', otherwise your browser won't know which page to display.

Note: since I have to actually put my site on each one and then see how it performs, these tests take a while. More hosting services will be added as soon as possible.
